Lionel Veale - Memories of WW II
LIONEL Veale was one of 80 men to serve behind enemy lines for the Australian Imperial Force -- and one of only 38 to tell the tale. The 93-year-old World War II veteran spent the majority of his service gathering intelligence, taking shelter in jungle hideouts and rescuing stranded Allied personnel. He would report his observations by a portable transceiver, much like the famous WW2 Coastwatchers. The former coastal defender helped defy Japanese forces at battlegrounds throughout the hundreds of islands in the Pacific.
Come along to the clubhouse at 85 Harper Street, Molendinar and listen to Lionel relate some of his experiences and display the radio equipment used 27 October 2012 - 10 am |
